The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has warned that the proposed state police must never be used as an instrument of political intimidation.
Kalu insisted that any decentralised policing system must be built on accountability, professionalism and service to the people.
He gave the warning on Thursday while addressing participants at the 2026 South-East Regional Security Summit themed “Collaborative approaches to strengthening security and regional stability.”
The Deputy Speaker, who also chairs the House Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, said Nigeria’s worsening security challenges require collaborative action by governments, security agencies, communities and other stakeholders.
He argued that the country’s centralised policing structure is increasingly overstretched and unable to effectively respond to security threats across the federation.
