They struck forty seconds apart on a national holiday (St. John the Baptist). The first earthquake, magnitude 7.2, hit at 6:04 p.m. on June 24 near San Felipe, in northwestern Venezuela. Thirty-nine seconds later, a 7.5 magnitude quake—the largest to hit Venezuela since 1900—struck nearby.
