I sympathize with C. S. Lewis’s claim that movies preempt imagination, locking the fantastic elements of story into set frames. As a professor who teaches film adaptation as well as literature, however, I’d add that tackling multiple reimaginings of a classic can reveal more than sticking to the source material alone. I understand Homer’s Odyssey better because I have laughed at a parody, taught a poetic sequel, and written about a critically acclaimed reimagining it takes an entire course to teach.
Going forward, I will most certainly teach Christopher Nolan’s powerful adaptation.
