Nigeria’s renewed push to position itself as a global outsourcing hub is timely and potentially transformative. At the global launch of the Hire From Nigeria campaign in New York, Vice President Kashim Shettima declared that Nigeria could become the next frontier for global outsourcing, as the country seeks to connect its vast pool of young professionals with employers across the world.
The ambition is substantial. The Federal Government is targeting one million export-linked jobs by 2030, compared with an estimated 20,000 Nigerians currently employed by domestic and international outsourcing companies. The government also says it wants to produce 10 million globally certified Nigerians by 2030.
These targets are bold. But Nigeria must ensure that Hire From Nigeria does not become another attractive slogan that produces conferences, launches and communiqués without creating jobs on the required scale.
