The UK government has excluded offenders convicted of rape, serious child sexual offences and grooming crimes from planned changes to prison release rules after Prime Minister Andy Burnham ordered an urgent review of the sentencing reforms.
The decision, announced in a statement published by the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of Justice on Tuesday, means offenders convicted of rape, serious child sexual offences and grooming-related crimes will continue to serve their existing custodial sentences and will not benefit from earlier release under the new Sentencing Act.
According to the government, the offences will be added to categories already excluded from the reforms, alongside more than 18,000 offenders serving life sentences, extended determinate sentences and other offenders deemed by courts to pose the greatest danger to the public.
