A United States lawmaker has moved a fresh motion on the floor of Congress demanding the immediate and unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Congressman John James (R-Michigan) made the call on Thursday while addressing his colleagues, describing Nigeria as “the deadliest place on earth to be a Christian.”
He linked Kanu’s continued detention to broader allegations of religious persecution and violence against Christians in the country.
James urged the Nigerian government to conduct a fresh trial for Kanu in full compliance with Nigeria’s constitution, based on credible evidence, while ensuring access to legal counsel, proper medical care, and humane detention conditions consistent with international law.
The lawmaker alleged that Kanu was convicted in a “false show trial” on terrorism charges for speaking out against violence in Nigeria.
He claimed the IPOB leader is currently serving a life sentence following what he described as unjust proceedings.
