Former Wolverhampton captain, Troy Deeney, has delivered a harsh critique of England’s wingers following their hard-fought 2-0 victory over Panama in the World Cup.
England boss, Thomas Tuchel implemented five changes to the lineup that was held to a scoreless draw against Ghana earlier this week; however, these modifications did little to enhance the Three Lions’ fluidity.
Morgan Rogers found it challenging to partner effectively in a revamped midfield alongside Jude Bellingham, while Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka only managed to display brief glimpses of their actual capabilities.
Saka, who was making his first start of the tournament, played for just over an hour before being substituted for his teammate Noni Madueke.
Unfortunately, the former Chelsea player was similarly ineffective, with his performance epitomized by his initial action when, facing an unmarked full-back, he overhit the ball and inadvertently sent it out of play, much to Deeney’s dismay.
“Take a look at the possessions lost: 14 for Saka, 20 for Rashford, and 7 for Madueke,” Deeney remarked to CBS Sports.
“That’s acceptable if, while playing, you are being truly incisive with your passing and executing clever flicks around the corner.
“If you observe that match, Madueke, upon his introduction, kicked the ball past an opponent only to send it out for a goal kick. Should I be thrilled about that?
“Rashford consistently cut in on his right foot, aiming to shoot, and if that’s not the case, I’ll kick it, and someone will be there. It was exceedingly wasteful.
