NLC, TUC Threaten Nationwide Strike Over Rising Insecurity

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have warned that they may embark on a nationwide strike if the worsening insecurity across the country is not urgently addressed.

The unions issued the threat during a joint media briefing at the ongoing 114th International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland.

They cited the escalating wave of terrorism, banditry, and kidnappings as reasons for their planned action, stressing that workers and communities are increasingly vulnerable.

NLC and TUC leaders dismissed claims by some state governors that negotiations were underway with workers on a proposed ₦100,000 minimum wage, insisting such statements do not reflect the reality of current discussions on workers’ welfare.

Recent incidents, including the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State, highlight the growing insecurity that has prompted the unions’ warning.

The labour bodies vowed to take decisive action if the government fails to restore safety and protect citizens, describing the strike
