Our Artistes Losing Gigs, Businesses Affected, South African Minister Cries Out

The South African Government has raised concerns over the economic and cultural fallout from xenophobic claims circulating across the continent, warning that businesses and artists are already suffering losses.

Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mmamoloko Kubayi, speaking in an interview with SABC on Sunday, clarified that the recent mass evacuation in the country was directed at illegal immigrants and not motivated by xenophobia.

Kubayi admitted that the backlash has been significant, with South African companies abroad facing challenges and artists seeing their performances cancelled.

“We can’t lie about the backlash… many of our artists perform across the continent, and some are losing income as gigs are cancelled,” she said.

She explained that the government, working through DECO, is engaging with businesses abroad to provide consular and support services. Kubayi stressed the importance of protecting legally resident foreigners while addressing the issue of illegal immigration.
