The Obidient Movement has strongly condemned a Federal High Court ruling that directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister five political parties, warning that the decision threatens democratic inclusion in Nigeria.
On Monday, Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court, Abuja, ordered INEC to delist the African Democratic Congress, Accord Party, Action Peoples Party, Action Alliance, and Zenith Labour Party.
The ruling followed a suit filed by the National Forum of Former Legislators, which argued that parties failing to meet constitutional thresholds under Section 225A of the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act 2022 should be deregistered.
Reacting in a statement signed by National Coordinator Dr. Yunusa Tanko, the Obidient Movement described the ruling as a setback for Nigeria’s democratic space.
The group, aligned with the political philosophy of Peter Obi, stressed that democracy thrives on inclusiveness and diverse platforms for citizens to express their aspirations.
