The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced that its Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will suspend operations on Friday, June 19, 2026, to observe Juneteenth National Independence Day.
In a statement posted on its official X account on Thursday, the mission confirmed: “The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Friday, June 19, 2026, in observance of Juneteenth National Independence Day.”
Routine consular services, including visa appointments and passport processing, along with other non-emergency operations, will be unavailable during the closure. Normal diplomatic and consular activities are scheduled to resume on the following business day.
Juneteenth, observed annually on June 19, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It marks the date in 1865 when Union soldiers reached Galveston, Texas, and announced the freedom of enslaved African Americans more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
