Nigeria has only about 265,000 active Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) connections, a level that remains below the African average and underscores the scale of infrastructure investment required to support the country’s rapidly expanding digital economy, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has said.
Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, disclosed this while delivering the keynote address at the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) High-Level Industry Forum on FTTH held Tuesday in Lagos under the theme, “Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) in Nigeria: Addressing Challenges, Strengthening Standards, and Ensuring Sustainable Deployment.”
According to Maida, Nigeria’s approximately 265,000 active FTTH connections translate into penetration levels that remain below the African average of 2.6% and far behind more mature global markets, where FTTH penetration averages about 47%.
“This underscores the significant need to expand Fibre-to-the-Home and bridge the gap in the global market,”
