Apple’s decision to raise prices on several MacBook and iPad models could translate into even higher retail prices for Nigerian consumers as the global artificial intelligence (AI) boom begins to push up the cost of everyday consumer technology.

The price increases, announced by Apple on Thursday, affect several MacBook and iPad models, marking the company’s first major consumer price adjustment linked directly to surging memory chip costs driven by the rapid expansion of AI data centres worldwide.

For Nigerian consumers, who already contend with exchange rate volatility, import duties and retailer mark-ups, the latest increases could make Apple’s premium devices even less affordable, industry analysts say.

Apple says soaring prices for memory and storage chips have made it increasingly difficult for the company to absorb higher component costs.
