Bagudu seeks AI safeguards under new NIMC Act

Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, has called for stronger safeguards to protect Nigerians’ personal data as the country implements the newly enacted National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Act 2026.

The minister, who made the call during a strategic engagement with Dr Abisoye Odusote, Director-General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), in Abuja, warns that the digital identity ecosystem must keep pace with the rapid evolution of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies.

Bagudu reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to implementing the new legislation signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on June 26, 2026.

The NIMC Act 2026, the minister said, represents a major milestone in strengthening Nigeria’s digital identity framework, but stressed that its success would ultimately be measured by effective implementation and tangible benefits for citizens.
