You have to consider the courage it takes to live each of these realities in a place like Nigeria before scoffing at people’s marital status.
Being single after a certain age takes courage. You have to live with the daily experience of being asked:
“How is your spouse?”
“How are the children?”
…when you are neither married nor have children.
And then come the occasional pangs of “not being married” that hit you, not just because of loneliness, but because everyone around you is deafening your hearing with “my husband” or “my wife.”
Marriage is a huge achievement because it takes a lot to keep living with someone who makes you so mad you want to quit this minute, but the next minute, you put everything behind you and continue as if they are the best thing that ever happened to you.
It’s also not easy to constantly turn away
