Elders Forum Advocates for Enhanced Healthcare and Social Support for Seniors

The Elders forum at the Chief Tony Anenih Geriatric Centre, University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, has urged for better access to healthcare, more robust social support systems, and increased involvement of older individuals in policy development to encourage healthy ageing and enhance their quality of life.

This appeal was made during the celebrations for the 2026 International Day of Older Persons, which served to honor the contributions of senior citizens and to shed light on the challenges faced by Nigeria’s ageing population.

At the event, Dr. Lawrence Adebusuyi, Founder-Director of the Centre, expressed that the programme allowed older persons to celebrate themselves while fostering their health and social well-being.

He noted that while the United Nations designates October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons each year, the Centre opted for a more suitable date to celebrate the occasion with Forum members.

Adebusuyi pointed out that both limited access to healthcare and social isolation are significant issues facing older people, especially those whose children reside
