Imo State University has inaugurated a robotic surgery academy in collaboration with the Imo Robotic Centre, with the goal of training 500 surgeons and other surgical professionals over the next two years.
Professor Kingsley Ekwueme, who has recently taken on the role of Professor of Robotic Surgery at the university, announced the initiative, branding it as Africa’s first dedicated robotic surgery academy situated on a university campus.
He explained that the collaboration was the result of a meeting between the university and its partners on August 18, 2026, which led to a memorandum of understanding being signed and a designated building set aside for the academy.
Ekwueme noted that the program intends to train over 250 Nigerian surgeons along with other surgical professionals, drawing participants from all over Africa.
The curriculum will encompass various specialties, including urology, gynecology, and general surgery, rather than concentrating solely on prostate-related operations.
“We are not only training surgeons, but we are also training the whole surgical team. And this is very important,”
