FCCPC resumes digital lending regulation after court ruling

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has resumed enforcement of its regulations for Nigeria’s digital lending sector after the Federal High Court in Lagos upheld the Commission’s authority to regulate online lending platforms.

The FCCPC said its Digital, Electronic, Online or Non-Traditional Consumer Lending Regulations, 2025 (DEON Regulations) are now fully operational following the court’s decision.

Justice A.L. Allagoa dismissed a suit filed by the Wireless Application Service Providers Association of Nigeria challenging the DEON Regulations. The court also discharged an earlier interim order that had restrained the FCCPC from implementing the rules, clearing the way for the Commission to restart enforcement activities.

The DEON Regulations provide guidelines for companies offering loans through digital channels, including mobile applications, websites and other online platforms. The rules are intended to ensure responsible lending, transparent disclosure of loan terms and stronger consumer protection against unfair practices.
