Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has warned that Nigeria remains vulnerable to the kinds of conditions that sparked the 1967-1970 civil war, stressing that the country may not survive another such conflict.
Obasanjo made the remarks on Wednesday while receiving a historical publication titled ‘Asaba Massacre’ from the Isama Ajie of Asaba, Chief Chuck Nduka-Eze, at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta. The document chronicles the killing of civilians in Asaba during the Nigerian Civil War.
Reflecting on his own involvement in the war, Obasanjo said he could not provide detailed accounts of the Asaba killings because military operations in that area were commanded by the late Gen. Murtala Muhammed. He has consistently maintained this position when questioned about the events.
“The conditions that led to the Nigerian civil war years ago still remain unresolved,” Obasanjo stated.
