Olusegun Obasanjo, former president of Nigeria, has urged that governments at all levels must treat the nation’s agricultural zones not just as economic assets, but as critical infrastructure vital to national security.
The former president, who spoke in Abuja on Thursday at the AgriconnectX summit themed: ‘Food security is national security’, warned that failing to protect the farmlands and farmers that feed the country poses a direct threat to Nigeria’s long-term stability and national sovereignty.
He explained that Agriculture is a critical sector, particularly regarding crops and livestock, adding that the most urgent action required of both federal, state and local governments is to protect the farmers and ensure they can safely access their land and food security while maintaining farm security and habitat security.
