Mounting political violence ahead of the August 15 Osun State governorship election is raising fresh concerns among economists, election observers, and political stakeholders. They warn that the killings could damage the state economy, scare away investors, and cast a shadow over political preparations for the 2027 general election.
The warnings followed confirmation by the Nigeria Police Force that it has recorded about 30 cases of alleged politically motivated killings in the build-up to the governorship poll. This underscores growing fears that the contest between the ruling Accord Party and the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) could become more volatile as election day approaches.
