The House of Representatives on Tuesday urged the Federal Government to strengthen food safety regulations and enforcement across the country in response to the growing burden of foodborne diseases.
The resolution followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Billy Osawaru, who represents a constituency in Edo State.
The motion highlighted the need to curb the rising incidence of foodborne illnesses and improve public awareness of food safety.
Presenting the motion, Osawaru cited data from the World Health Organisation showing that unsaffood causes about 866 million illnesses and 1.5 million deaths globally every year, with Africa accounting for the highest burden.
He acknowledged ongoing government efforts to improve food safety through the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3 and 12, as well as the statutory responsibilities of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON).
