Afro-jazz musician, Salako, has released a 12-minute single titled Dagunro which explores Yoruba culture, resilience and spirituality while challenging the growing trend of shorter songs driven by streaming algorithms.
Speaking on the inspiration behind the project, Salako said the song was created as an artistic expression rather than a commercial pursuit.
“I am doing this for art. I am doing it to express what is on the inside and I am okay with that,” he said while explaining why he chose to release a lengthy composition despite industry preferences for shorter tracks.
According to the musician, the track derives its meaning from Yoruba culture, symbolising strength and resistance. The term refers to someone who stands for the people, while also describing something that cannot be easily overcome or consumed.
