U.S. President Donald Trump has not made a public appearance since reports emerged nearly 24 hours ago that two American soldiers were killed in an Iranian attack on U.S. forces in Jordan on Friday.
After spending several hours at his golf club in New Jersey, Trump travelled to New York City, where he is attending the FIFA Club World Cup final. Although he has not addressed the nation in person, the president spoke briefly by telephone with a media outlet, describing the deaths as “very sad” and expressing his condolences.
“It’s a very sad thing,” Trump said. “They died serving their country.”
The deaths mark the first reported U.S. military fatalities since the beginning of the current conflict involving Iran, a development that could significantly alter the political and public landscape in the United States.
