Trump signs order to rename Lake Ontario ‘Lake America’
Donald Trump, US President, has signed an executive order seeking to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America”, escalating a diplomatic and trade dispute with Canada.
Trump said on Thursday that the name change was “official, effective immediately” and that his administration had filed the necessary documents. The move follows his earlier threats to rename the lake amid worsening US-Canada trade relations.
Lake Ontario is one of North America’s five Great Lakes and is shared by the United States and Canada. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected Trump’s move, saying the lake has been known as Lake Ontario for more than 400 years.
Carney said the name predates both Canadian Confederation and the US Declaration of Independence, insisting that “this lake is called Lake Ontario – today and forever.”
