WhatsApp has begun rolling out global username reservations, introducing a major privacy feature that will allow millions of users, including Nigerians, to connect without revealing their phone numbers.
The update marks one of WhatsApp’s biggest privacy enhancements since the introduction of end-to-end encryption and is expected to have significant implications for users in Nigeria, where the platform has become the country’s dominant messaging service for personal communication, business transactions, community groups and digital commerce, the social media company says in an announcement on Monday.
Once the feature becomes fully available later this year, users who choose to create a username will be able to start conversations without exposing their phone numbers to strangers, new contacts or members of public groups.
For many Nigerians, the feature could help reduce unwanted calls, spam messages, scams and privacy concerns associated with sharing
